The PPBA Does Improvement Work on Fields 4 and 5

Attention: open in a new window. PDFPrintE-mail

OCTOBER 2009 - We are pleased to announce that the Prospect Park Baseball Association has completed an improvement project to reduce the pooling of rainwater on Fields 4 and 5 in the Long Meadow of Prospect Park.

This work -- re-grading and adding 80 tons of new clay on each field, as well as the renovation of Field 2 completed for the 2007 season – was made possible by your purchase of tickets for the PPBA Mets and Yankees fundraising events over the past few years. Without your support of our fundraisers, these renovations would not have been possible. Thank you very much!

This field work will significantly improve conditions on the affected fields, leading to faster recovery and more games being played after it rains. Our goal, after all, is to see the kids play as many games as possible.

Of course, the ultimate solution would be to tear up the fields and add a new drainage system beneath the clay. But installation of such drainage systems costs twenty times more than what the PPBA has just invested, and the City’s current budget crisis has left the Parks Department with insufficient funds for such capital projects.

So the PPBA has stepped in to help. And we will continue to hold fundraisers -- and again seek your generous support -- with the aim of using those proceeds to support projects that improve the playing experience of all the nearly 2000 kids who play baseball and softball in the PPBA.

You can help to keep the fields playable next season by making sure that no one brushes water from the dirt on the infield back onto the grass. This creates ridges and causes indentations that cause even more puddling on the infields. Please leave such work to the park workers and advise people you see doing this not to make the situation worse.

Once again, thank you for your support and we look forward to another great season in the spring of 2010!
